U16s win League Cup
In a exciting final, our U16s beat Team Bath 3-2 (aet). It was a great performance by the boys who really raised their game for the final. We made a great start and were two-up early on. As expected, Team Bath made a strong comeback and really challenged our boys. At half time the score was 2-1 to Chew Valley. The boys put in a great show of desire and determination in the second half and almost held on to their lead. With full time approaching Team Bath equalised to take the final into extra time. In a thrilling finish, Mike Rimmer broke through to score the deciding goal. Winning the cup meant that the team had done the "double" in their final season. This has made it a very special end to their time with the club. Thanks to Bishop Sutton for staging the final.

" The FA Charter Standard sets standards of coaching, administration and child protection for all clubs outside the Football League and Premier League. 6th Dec 2007 Our football coaches meet Roberto Carlos

On a recent trip to Milan, our coaches Ian Rossiter and Dave Hedges met with Brazilian football legend Roberto Carlos. They had been invited by Volkan Balli of top Turkish team Fenerbahce to stay with them for their Champions League match with Italian giants Inter.

With the help of his personal translator, Carlos was able to talk about his distinguished career. “I am excited to be playing in my 112th Champions League game” he said. This is a record he shares with Raul of Real Madrid.

As coaches at both Chew Valley FC and Bristol City Academy, Ian and Dave were keen to talk about youth development with Carlos. He advised that “Ball skills with control and love of the football” are the first things that young Brazilian boys master. “This should be encouraged in England” he added.

During their stay, Dave and Ian also attended the UEFA briefing at the San Siro stadium. “It’s amazing how things are planned to the finest detail and second to ensure that the game goes ahead without a hitch” Ian explained.

Our coaches have now been invited to accompany Fenerbahce coach Onder Ozen on a trip to Arsenal to spend time watching Arsene Wenger. They now await further details on what could prove to be a great opportunity to see the work of Wenger at close-hand.

6th Dec 2007 Coaches spend day with Pompey

Tony Adams recently invited Ian Rossiter to spend a day with him at Portsmouth FC. Tony is now the Assistant Manager at Pompey working with Harry Redknapp and Joe Jordan.

Accompanied by Dave Hedges, Ian spent the morning watching all three of the above named work with the first team squad. Jordan worked on an Italian warm-up game that Ian has previously used at Chew Valley FC. Redknapp then worked on team shape in preparation for the next Premiership game v West Ham. Finally, Adams worked on a shooting practice. The last player to leave the field was David James who spent extra time on his kicking. They say you don’t get to the top and indeed stay there without putting the hard work in!

Our coaches then had lunch with the players and spent time talking to Adams and Redknapp. The link with Chew Valley FC is that Ollie Adams, the son of Tony was a player with us last season. He has since moved out of the area and is now with Forest Green Rovers. Before they left they also spoke to Kanu about youth development. He mentioned that before moving to Ajax at the age of 15, he had not received any formal coaching. He had learnt his ball skills on the bumpy surfaces back home in Nigeria.

One interesting outcome from the day is that Redknapp had talked to our coaches about the good form of Bristol City. He asked, “Which players are doing the business?” Rossiter replied, “That the revelation of the season has been Marvin Elliott.” Two weeks later, we read in the Sunday People that Portsmouth are watching the player! As they say, it’s a funny old game.

6th Dec 2007 Ian attends Youth Coaches Seminar

Ian Rossiter has recently attended a youth coaches seminar at the Ricoh Stadium of Coventry City FC. Sessions were taken by the ex-England manager Graham Taylor and also the current England and Newcastle United coach – Steve Round.

Ian took time out to meet and speak with both coaches. He also met with ex-Liverpool hardman Neil Ruddock who is now developing a youth programme for ex-Academy boys. The photos below show Ian with Steve Round and Neil Ruddock.

The sessions confirmed the basic requirements of youth football, working on a good first touch and good awareness and movement. Time was also spent on 1v1 and 2v2 'beat-the-man' drills. All the things that we encourage at Chew Valley FC.

6th Sept 2007 Chew Valley Under 9's success at the Frome Town tournament.

Both the under 9's A and B sides launched head first into the new season, with training on the 1st September followed by a team BBQ kindly hosted by the Osborne family. At the Frome tournament the next day our boys were eager to start, resulting in 4 wins, 4 draws and only 1 game lost. (Our first since the beginning of the last season!) 19 goals were scored - some outstanding with the quality of passes and teamwork remarkable considering the Summer break. This resulted, quite deservingly with the A team winning their league and the Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Shield, and the B team coming 3rd in their group. This positioning didn't reflect the high standard of their play in a very memorable and exciting day. Well done to all concerned.

28th June 2007 New Players Wanted

Virtually all age groups are looking for new players for the new season. Please contact the relevant manager if you're looking for a trial.

20th Mar 2007 Chew Valley Under 9’s v Bristol City Academy Under 8/9’s

Our Under 9’s capped a fine season to date with a well deserved victory over their Bristol City Academy counterparts on Saturday. The ‘A’ team played probably their best game of the season to run out worthy 3-1 winners against the Academy ‘A’ side. Our ‘B’ team also gave a fine account of themselves before eventually going down 3-0 in a very exciting 2nd match. Our thanks go to Dave Hedges for organizing the fixture and Kevin Scott, the Bristol City Coach, for bringing his teams out to play us.
6th Feb 2007 The U12's have now won their league for the fourth successive season. Both Deb and Chris would like thank the boys for their full commitment and outstanding efforts this season.
19th Dec 2006 Chew Valley Get Some Professional Coaching

Over the last couple of weeks our teams have been benefiting from the professional coaching of City Legend, Alan Walsh.
Alan is now the Development Coach at Bristol City working with the first team squad. He had a distinguished career at City, playing almost 300 games and scoring 97 League goals. He was signed on for City by Terry Cooper for £18,000 in 1984 and played alongside the likes of Steve McLaren and David Moyes. He was a goalscoring left winger, with the famous "Walshie shuffle".
Alan is due to continue his developement work with Chew after the Christmas break.
31st Oct 2006 The sports centre have asked us to remind players and coaches of their footwear requirements for playing on the astroturf pitches. Training shoes and moulded studs are acceptable, metal studs and blades are not. Please make sure your players are aware of this.
25th Oct 2006 Chew Valley Coaches Help Zico

It's not every day that you get a call from Zico asking for your help. That's what happened to our coaches Dave Hedges and Ian Rossiter. The Brazilian legend is now coach of Turkish club Fenerbahce. Having drawn Newcastle in the UEFA cup, Zico enlisted the help of Ian and Dave to assist the club with their match preparations for the tie played on Thursday 19th October.
Contact with Zico was made through Volkan Balli - Fenerbahce Administration Manager - who has known Dave for over 10 years. Dave stated “We were delighted to help Volkan, Zico and all our friends at Fenerbahce”
The first task was to watch Newcastle play and prepare a match report. After taking the short flight north, our coaches made their way to St James Park. Sat alongside Steve McClaren in the Directors Box, they watched Newcastle narrowly lose to Bolton Wanderers.
With only a few days to analyse the match and prepare an opposition report, our coaches set to work. Their report included player assessments, team formations, details of set pieces, analysis of defence, midfield and attack and their suggestions regarding match tactics.
Our coaches then returned to Newcastle to stay with the Fenerbahce Team. At the hotel Dave and Ian met with Zico and his assistant coaches. They ran through the match report and quizzed the coaches further regarding the Newcastle team.
The night before the game, the Fenerbahce team trained at St James Park. The photo shows Dave and Ian on the pitch with Zico.
This was to be the first game in the UEFA group for the teams. As the away team, Fenerbahce would be delighted with a point and the tactics were set with this in mind.
Fenerbahce defended well and restricted Newcastle to few clear chances. Playing on the counter-attack they could not find the final pass to create opportunities themselves. However, with the score at 0-0 and with less than 15 mins to play the match tactics were going to plan. Then on 79 mins Fenerbahce failed to clear a Newcastle corner and Sibereski put them 1-0 up. This was enough to give Newcastle a narrow win.
Back at the team hotel, Zico thanked Ian and Dave for their efforts, “So close” he told them. To take part in top European football has been a great experience for our coaches. Ian added “To work alongside Zico was a fantastic opportunity and can only benefit our work at Chew Valley.”
If Fenerbahce manage to qualify from the group, there is a possibility that they could play Tottenham, Blackburn Rovers or Rangers. Zico will be calling once again.

Our club coaches with Fenerbahce

Club coaches Dave Hedges, Ian Rossiter and Kevin Smithies have recently spent time with Fenerbahce. The trio travelled to Eindhoven and were guests of the Turkish club for their important Champions League game with Dutch team PSV.

Sadly, Fenerbahce lost this decisive match 2-0, but our coaches once again had a fantastic experience of top European football. They would like to thank Volkan Balli and the Fenerbahce club for allowing them this memorable trip.

The night before the game our coaches travelled with the team to the Phillips Stadium. Here, they watched Fenerbahce train for an hour, before returning to the team hotel. At the hotel, our coaches talked with team manager - Christoph Daum and also relaxed with the other players, including top Turkish international Tuncay. Below are some pictures from Eindhoven.

Both the under 7's A and B teams were fab in their second match on Saturday. The A's won 5 - 0 and the B's 3 - 0 against a more experienced Frome side.

Trevor Brooking Congratulates Chew Valley FC

The FA have recently held their Charter Standard Club Conference in London as part of the Grass Roots Football Show 2005. Club coach, Ian Rossiter attended the conference and met with ex England International Trevor Brooking.  Now the FA Development Director, Brooking congratulated the club on its FA Charter Club status.  The prestigious award is given to clubs that can demonstrate high quality and best practice in football coaching and child protection. The award is something we can all feel proud of at the club, "it provides recognition for the quality provision that we provide to our members."

The Grass Roots Show included coaching demonstrations and other workshops.  Former Arsenal keeper Bob Wilson also attended and was full of praise for the new event.
“I think the show is much needed,” he said. “The game of football needed something like this because the grassroots is critical to the game. That is where the players of the future will come from.
Further details of the show can be found at:
